Exception

As I lie next to you
Cigarette in my hand
Happy sad feeling
So perfect, so right
Arms wrapped around
Finite moments
Time flashing by
Night approaches dawn
Getting anxious, upset,
want to cry
Pale face, lifeless eyes

staring at the patterns
of the smoke
Sniveling heart
I want to scream.
But the lips refuse to part
Beg, plead, protest
Make an exception,
Morning light,
Make an exception
Pray don’t come today
Months of foreplay with words
Saying what you dont mean

Silly!
Not saying what you mean
Taking furtive looks.
Foolish games, acting juvenile
Those bursts of joy
In anticipation of this night
They all come to an end

Strangers in just a few hours
Song has hit the crescendo
No more music.
Silence.
